Since it is my last week in San Francisco for a while, I decided I needed to finish well in all areas of life, including the area of really good food! So this morning I went down to Tartine, by far the best bakery in SF and according to the NY Times food writer and me the best bakery in the US, to finish off my SF Grand Tour of sweets where I began it in August: with the coveted Morning Bun.
For those who have not experienced this devilish delight (angelic rather), Tartine's Morning Bun is a viennoiserie (breakfast pastry) that resembles a sticky bun or cinnamon roll. However, instead of being saturated with nuts or icing, it has a subtle orange flavor paired perfectly with a delicate sprinkling of cinnamon sugar. Oh, and of course tons of butter.
Only a novice with dare eat one with a fork a knife. If you are a true pastry lover you know you must dissect a Morning Bun with your hands in order to appreciate the texture of the crispy caramelized sugar as it meets the soft croissant dough that gets increasingly moister and yummier towards the center. To quote the great Ferris Bueller, "It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up."
As for me, I no longer will have the means for a while, so I am mourning the loss of the Morning Bun :(

ReplyDeleteA: so, I learn about Humphrey's on Monday (they're closed), and Tartine on Wednesday (their closed day)... but I am making a list of must-tastes now :)
ReplyDeleteYes, sadly I made that mistake when I first tried to go to Humphrey. However, Tartine is not closed on Wednesday. They are open 7 days a week, with different hours though.
